Instagram hits 400 million users

Photo-sharing social network Instagram has hit a new milestone, attracted 400 million users.

The company announced the news in a blog post entitled ‘Celebrating a Community of 400 Million,’ where it also went into a little extra detail over the makeup of its userbase.

It’s just 10 months since Instagram announced that it had hit 300 million users, which saw the service overtaking Twitter (to much sniffiness and bad language).

Among the 100 million users who have joined up in the last year, more than half are based in Europe and Asia. Meanwhile Brazil, Japan and Indonesia are the three heaviest contributors to this recent rise.

Indeed, overall, more than 75 percent of Instagram users are from outside the company’s US home territory.

The Instagram service is growing fast, then, and its users are particularly active. According to Instagram, 80 million photos are being shared each day.

This latest landmark figure follows a busy few months from the Facebook-owned photo-sharing service. Last month it opened up the ability to share normally proportioned pictures (not just the iconic square variety), while earlier in September it emerged that the company had dramatically extended its advertising platform.

Those 400 million users are now subject to extended 30 second ad videos and more carefully targeted ads in general.
