Improved OneDrive integration coming to third-party apps

Microsoft has announced the release of an API for its OneDrive cloud storage platform, which enables app developers to build it directly into their apps.

The integration of the OneDrive API will eventually make it easier for users to upload their files to the cloud, regardless of which app they’re working within.

Microsoft says the API is available for developers on all of the major platforms; iOS, Android, Windows and the web.

As the tool is available from today, the functionality boost should be coming to some of the most popular apps within the next few weeks. Microsoft says the features, which aim to provide “better speed and functionality,” include:

  • The ability to retrieve new changes to files and folders to efficiently keep a large set of files in sync with minimal calls.
  • Resumable uploads of files up to 10 GB via file-fragment uploading for working with rich content, like HD videos
  • Customisable file thumbnail images for delivering a more integrated experience across your app and OneDrive.

On the official OneDrive blog, Microsoft says it is building the API into all of its own apps to ensure all parties are working with the same tools.

“The OneDrive API is a major step toward making the platform more accessible and powerful, but this is only the beginning. We are working on a lot of other improvements and features that we will release throughout the year. So stay tuned for more…a lot more,” Ryan Gregg wrote.

The announcement from Microsoft is the latest in a long line of improvements aimed at making OneDrive, Office and its other apps easily accessible across all platforms.
