Hyundai Blue Link app offers smartwatch car control

Hyundai’s Blue Link app now allows Hyundai car owners to control certain elements of their vehicle usaing a smartwatch.

The app lets US-based owners start and stop their vehicle remotely, as well as lock and unlock its doors, using an Android phone. Now that functionality has been expanded to Android Wear smartwatches.

It’s also possible to beep your car’s horn, flash its lights, and access service information from your watch, as well as locate your car in a packed carpark.

Hyundai Blue Link offers voice control for all of these actions, so you can say things like “Start my car,” “Lock my car,” or “Find my car” to initiate the appropriate function.

The Blue Link app is compatible with all first and second generation Blue Link-equipped Hyundai models, and currently works with Android Wear smartwatches when paired with a phone via Bluetooth. Hyundai has promised an Apple Watch version of the app when the device launches.

Speaking of which, during a recent visit to London, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the Apple Watch had been designed with similar car control in mind. He believes that a paired smartwatch could replace the clumsy key fobs as a replacement to old fashioned keys.

This has fuelled speculation that Apple is working on an entire car of its own, rather than simply the already-announced CarPlay in-car UI.
