Huawei working on new Samsung Galaxy S4 challenger?

Having branched out from its budget mobile roots, Chinese handset manufacturer looks set to tackle all corners of the smartphone sector with a new Samsung Galaxy S4 challenger reportedly in the works.

Having already unveiled a selection of high-end handsets earlier this year, including the quad-core Huawei Ascend P2, Huawei looks set to further target the premium end of the market, with a mooted 4.9-inch device tipped to rival the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 5 and HTC One.

Citing “rumours that spread through multiple Chinese websites this morning,” UnwiredView has suggested that Huawei’s Samsung Galaxy S4 competitor will land hot on the heels of its more illustrious rival, with a formal unveiling for the as yet unnamed device pegged for April.

Whilst Huawei has yet to confirm the existence of any such device, latest reports have suggested that the mystery Samsung Galaxy S4 challenger from Huawei will play host to a premium collection of innards with a 1.8GHz quad-core ARM Cortex A15 processor to be paired with a Mali T604 GPU.

With 2GB of RAM thrown into the mix, now the standard for high-end mobile devices, additional mooted specs for the rumoured Huawei device have suggested a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera, 2600mAh battery and a 4.9-inch 1080p Full HD display will further help the device rival the Samsung Galaxy S4.

What’s more, at a claimed 6.3mm thick, the leaked handset, which is reportedly currently in production, will line up significantly thinner than the 7.9mm thick S4, a form factor that would point towards a sizable bezel for added stability and structural rigidity.

Although such a specced handset would provide a tantalising competitor to the current cream of the smartphone crop, the timing of such a device from Huawei seems circumspect, with the manufacturer having launched its flagship Huawei Ascend D2 model less than three months ago. With that, we would advise these rumours be taken with a liberal pinch of salt.
