Huawei’s new smartphone battery hits 50% charge in just five minutes

Despite advancements in battery technology, charging your smartphone is still a bore.

Fortunately, Huawei has developed a revolutionary new type of battery that can charge 10 times faster than normal batteries.

As a result, the batteries are able to reach an incredible 50% capacity in just a few minutes.

Watt Lab, a research and development division of Huawei Technology Corporation, showed off the revolutionary new lithium-ion cells at the 56th Battery Symposium in Japan this week.

Two types of quick charging were demonstrated: a 600mAh was charged to 68% capacity in two minutes; a 3,000mAh battery was charged to 48% in five minutes.

Huawei is confident that this breakthrough in quick charging batteries will lead to a new revolution in electronic devices, especially with regard to mobile phones, electric vehicles, wearable devices, and mobile power supplies,” explains the company.

Huawei adds: “Soon, we will all be able to charge our batteries to full power in the time it takes to grab a coffee!”

So how does it work? Most smartphone batteries charge and discharge by moving lithium ions between electrodes.

Huawei says it bonded heteroatoms – ring structure atoms that aren’t carbon or hydrogen – to the molecule of graphite in anode, which works as a catalyst for capturing and transmitting lithium through carbon bonds.

According to Huawei, the heteroatoms allow the batteries to have a higher charging speed, but not at the expense of energy density or battery life.
