Huawei Mate 9 revealed in standard and curved-screen designs

Although we’ve already had the Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 this year, there’s still some smartphones to come in 2017.

One of which is the Huawei Mate 9, and, in keeping with the recent trend of revealing exactly what the phone will look like ahead of time, prolific leaker Evan Blass, otherwise known as @evleaks, has provided us with an early look.

The most notable thing about the leak, which Blass expanded on via VentureBeat, is that it reveals the handset will come in two forms – a standard and curved-screen version à la the S7 and S7 Edge.

In his article, Blass cites ‘two people familiar with the manufacturer’s plans’ as claiming the Mate 9 will come in the two designs – known internally as ‘Manhatten’ and ‘Long Island’, the latter being the curved screen model.

What’s more, it’s claimed the Long Island model will come with a QHD resolution whereas the Manhattan’s display will be FHD.

Interestingly, the report says the higher resolution on the Long Island model is there to support Android’s Daydream VR capabilities – which could make the Mate 9 the second ‘Daydream-ready’ handset after Google’s recently announced Pixel phone.

Other rumoured specs, seemingly confirmed by Blass’ report, include a 64-bit, eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 960 chip, a 5.9-inch display, and “various memory configurations, which top out at 6GB of RAM and 256GB storage capacity”.

The handsets are also expected to come with a P9-style dual camera setup, with the lenses and sensors said to be an improvement over the P9, coming with an f/2.0 aperture and 20 megapixels.

Unfortunately, it seems at this point that the supposedly Daydream-ready Long island will only be available in China, but as with all of this information, that’s yet to be confirmed.
