Huawei is about to launch a new operating system designed to power the ‘internet of things’.

What’s special about Huawei’s new OS is that the platform weighs in at just 10KB, which makes it the world’s most lightweight IoT OS.

Thus it’s been dubbed ‘LiteOS’, can will operate on a wide array of smart devices.

It can be widely applied to different areas including smart homes, wearable, connected vehicles and other industries,” explained a Huawei spokesperson.

The company confirmed that LiteOS will be open to all developers, which means they can quickly develop in-house IoT products using the software.

Huawei also says the OS will support “zero configuration, auto-discovery, and auto-networking.”

According to William Xu, Huawei’s head of strategy and marketing, the company isn’t looking to produce its own smart gadgets.

Instead, it wants ‘to provide the connections, not the devices,’ Xu explained, speaking to the Financial Times.

The company predicts that there’ll be 100 billion connections generated globally every hour by 2025, and LiteOS is their big push to capitalise on this.

The company also suggested it wasn’t looking to battle Android or iOS for domination of the smartphone market.

Instead, it wants to power a range of devices, with Xu giving the example of an electric toothbrush.

Such a device would purportedly be able to record how often and how effectively you brush, and provide feedback using LiteOS. Oh joy.

There is no definitive launch date for the system yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
