The Huawei Ascend P7 has been officially announced, featuring a 5-inch 1080p display and super-slim body.

Following on from the Ascend P6, the Huawei Ascend P7 has a razor-thin alumininum body. At just 6.5mm thick it is a little thinner than the Galaxy S5, and significantly thinner than the HTC One M8.

A slim design is one of the phone's main calling cards, similar to its predecessor.

Its main upgrade over its predecessor is seen in its screen, though. The size has been increased from 4.7 inches to a full five and resolution has been upped from 720p to 1080p.

Phone enthusiasts will note that this screen spec is more in-line with last year’s top-end phones – several of this year’s models have edged slightly past the 5-inch mark.

The Huawei Ascend P7 also has a relatively conservative CPU. It uses a HiSilicon quad-core 1.8GHz CPU. While an upgrade to the HiSilicon chip used in last year’s model, we do not expect it to quite match up with the Snapdragon 801 of the Galaxy S5.

In other respects, though, the Ascend P7 matches up pretty well with the high-end competition. It has 16GB of internal memory, which you can add to using  a microSD card.

The Huawei Ascend P7 is also a 4G phone, as you’d expect from any new high-end mobile. And its rear camera uses a 13-megapixel sensor, and dual-LED flash.

This is a little lower in resolution than the top phones from Samsung and Sony, but the Ascend P7 also has a very high-res front camera. It has an 8-megapixel sensor while most phones still make do with 1-2 megapixels.

The phone runs Android 4.4, and uses a version of Huawei’s normal custom Android interface, which is called Emotion. It lets you customise the look of the phone’s software with themes.

Huawei Ascend P7 release

Taking on the mantle of Huawei’s top Android phone, high sales targets are likely to be put on the Ascend P7. However, its predecessor did not manage to meet such targets last year.

Huawei predicted the Ascend P6 would sell 10 million units, but in it has only sold four million to date, despite racking-up a reported two million pre-orders.
