Huawei has kicked off Mobile World Congress 2012 in style this afternoon by announcing the Ascend D quad featuring the company’s own K3V2 quad-core processor.

Huawei made some bold claims during its press conference in Barcelona claiming that the Ascend D quad is the world's fastest smartphone , being 49 per cent fast that ”other smartphones” with company CEO Richard Yu comparing it at various times throughout the presentation to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 4S and even the Tegra 3-powered Transformer Prime tablet.

The new chip, which has a quad-core A9 CPU combined with a 16-core GPU, will have a clock speed of 1.5GHz. This fast processor will be needed to power the 4.5in 720p screen, which has a pixel density of 330ppi, which is just higher than the 326ppi pixel density of the Retina display of the iPhone.

The phone has integrated Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and earSmart technology does some noise cancellation trickery. There are no details yet about pricing or availability yet from Huawei.

The Ascend D quad is part of Huawei’s new Diamond series which will also feature the Ascend D XL featuring a huge 2,500mAh battery, and the Ascend D1, a dual-core version of the Ascend D quad.
