Most people won’t be able to get their hands on (or heads into) an HTC Vive VR headset before next year, it’s been revealed.
It was expected that the HTC Vive would be released in 2015, but while that’s technically still the case, it’s emerged that most people will have to wait until 2016 to get a taste.
Valve, the video game company that’s co-developing the Vive with HTC, recently released a press release around this weekend’s PAX showcase event in Seattle.
In it the company revealed a two-stage release plan for the HTC Vive.
“Later this year, HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems,” it reads, “with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016.”
In other words, only a lucky few will receive their Vive VR headsets in 2015. Most will have to wait.
We’ll still be waiting (im)patiently, regardless. In our various hands-on sessions with the HTC Vive technology, it’s emerged as arguably the most promising VR gaming set-up of the lot.

Among its many strengths relative to Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, it has the highest-resolution screens of the lot – that’s 1,200 x 1,080-pixels per eye, with a refresh rate of 90fps.
Developer units have been available for free since May, so there should be well over 80 VR games available for launch. Whenever that proves to be.
