Will HTC's first smart watch trump the Samsung Galaxy Gear?

HTC will show off its first smartwatch to mobile operators next week, according to a new report.

While some might be hoping for HTC to launch its smartwatch plans in the public eye at next week’s Mobile World Congress, it seems as if its plans aren’t quite that far along just yet.

Bloomberg claims that instead, HTC will show off a prototype smartwatch to a selection of mobile operators behind closed doors.

The report also claims that this is the first of three wearable devices in development at the struggling Taiwanese manufacturer. We can reportedly expect another smartwatch and a media player at some point in the not-too-distant future.

This first model will apparently be based on the Qualcomm Toq smartwatch, the processor maker’s unusual entry into the consumer electronics field that was launched late last year.

Qualcomm’s Toq was most notable for its pioneering Mirasol display, which goes some way to curing the biggest smartwatch issue out there right now - dodgy battery life. Mirasol displays effectively draw no power when dormant, despite the screen staying visible.

The second smartwatch on HTC’s roster apparently utilises the Google Now smart assistant service as its base, whilst the third example is said to be "an electronic bracelet that plays music."

HTC is aiming to launch its first wearable smart device by Christmas this year.
