HTC tipped to launch 8.9-in Android tablet on April 8

HTC is planning to launch a new tablet at its media event next month, new rumours suggest.

According to reports out of China, the Taiwanese company is planning to unveil the 8.9-inch device on April 8.

We’re already expecting HTC to unveil a host of new products at the event – not least the HTC One M9 Plus, the HTC One E9, and the HTC One E9 Plus.

According to the leak, HTC’s new slate will use an 8.9-inch display with a 1530 x 2048 pixel resolution.

It’s going to be powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core Allwinner H8 processor, built using a 28nm manufacturing process. Graphics, meanwhile, will be handled by a PowerVR SGX544 GPU.

There’s also going to be 2GB of RAM on board, as well as two storage options – 16GB or 32GB.

Other purported specs include a 16-megapixel front-facing camera, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 6,700mAh battery, and a chassis measuring 7.88m thin. Oh, and HTC’s BoomSound stereo speakers will be making an appearance too.

It’s also going to run off Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system, although it will be skinned with HTC’s Sense 7.

Although talk of a HTC tablet has been relatively quiet, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the device.

Last month, leaks emerged that suggested HTC was working on a new tablet that would be based on the Nexus 9.

The Nexus 9 was, of course, built by HTC for Google, and used a 9-inch display – that last bit sounds familiar.

Unfortunately, HTC hasn’t had the best record with tablets so far. The Nexus 9 was met with lukewarm critical reception, while previous offerings like the HTC Flyer and HTC Jetstream largely flopped.

It will be interesting to see whether HTC can take on board the criticisms surrounding the Nexus 9, and produce a more impressive Android tablet this time around.
