HTC’s next flagship tipped with wireless charging

HTC will add wireless charging as a headline feature in its next flagship smartphone, a report claims.

According to Ctimes, the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer will bundle wireless charging into the device to better compete with Samsung.

Both of Samsung’s latest smartphones, namely the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, offer wireless charging.

HTC’s recently unveiled One M9, however, can only be charged through a more traditional wired microUSB connection.

According to this latest report, however, HTC has chosen ‘to be a follower instead of a pioneer’, and follow Samsung’s suit.

The company has previously offered wireless charging on some handsets several years ago, but reportedly claimed that “the demand wasn’t that strong back then.”

The last time we saw wireless smartphone charging from HTC proper was as an optional case accessory for the HTC One M7.

Although wireless charging technology has improved in recent years, its adoption still isn’t widespread.

The fact that several different wireless charging standards are competing for market dominance has also impeded consumer uptake.

The adoption is also hindered by the fact that Apple hasn’t yet included wireless charging on any of its iPhones.

Loading up iPhones with the technology would certainly help standardise the wireless charging sector, and there were (now false) rumours that it would feature on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

It’s not clear whether the latest HTC rumours refer to the purportedly-upcoming HTC One M9 Plus, or a later unknown handset.
