HTC has confirmed that it won’t be providing any more software updates for the HTC One X or the HTC One X+.
Launched just short of two years ago, in April 2012, the HTC One X marked HTC’s return to critical and design (if not commercial) excellence with its striking unibody polycarbonate shell and strong performance.
The HTC One X, as well as its minor revision the HTC One X+, certainly paved the way for the relative success of the HTC One around a year later.
It might sound like we’re writing a eulogy for the HTC One X, and in a way we are. HTC has just confirmed that it is cutting the life support for its ageing smartphone. There won’t be any more software updates.
“We can confirm that the One X+ will not receive further Android updates & will remain on the current version of Android,” reads a recent tweet from HTC UK.
This means that the HTC One X is stuck on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (with HTC’s custom Sense 5 UI), and won’t be getting Android 4.4 KitKat or beyond – at least, not officially. You can bet that an avid team of amateur rooters will keep the well considered 4.7-inch phone alive.
HTC One X+ owners in particular will be a feeling a little short-changed at the news, as the souped up revision was only launched a little over a year ago.
Technically speaking, both the HTC One X and the HTC One X+ would be more than capable of running Android 4.4 KitKat smoothly. In fact, KitKat’s main feature is its stripped-back, more efficient nature, aimed at improving performance on lower-end (or indeed older) hardware.
