HTC has officially taken the wraps off the much-leaked HTC One Mini 2.
Offering a similar design to the highly rated HTC One M8, but with a smaller size and more modest specs, the HTC One Mini 2 takes its place as the mid-range champion of the HTC range.
Externally you get a similar metallic unibody design to the aforementioned One M8, but the area immediately surrounding the screen glass is of a somewhat less premium plastic material.
Speaking of the display, out goes the HTC One M8’s 5-inch 1080p unit and in comes a 4.5-inch 720p variant. This produces a pixel density of 326ppi, which might be significantly lower than its big brother, but is identical to the premium-priced iPhone 5S.
Internally you get a quad-core Snapdragon 400 CPU clocked at 1.2GHz and backed by 1GB of RAM. There’s 16GB of internal storage, which can be bolstered significantly thanks to the presence of a microSD slot.
HTC has dropped one of the most distinctive features of the HTC One M8 in the dual-lens UltraPixel camera, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We found it to be one of the weakest elements of the otherwise excellent M8 package.
In its place here is a standard 13-megapixel snapper, with a 5-megapixel variant around front for those seemingly all-important selfies and video calls.
The HTC One Mini 2 is powered by a 2,100mAh battery. That’s around 500mAh less capacious than the HTC One M8’s battery unit, but then the smaller device is pushing far fewer pixels with a less powerful processor.
Interestingly, the HTC One Mini 2 retains the same BoomSound amplifiers that gave the HTC One M8 such excellent sound from its stereo speakers. It’ll also have the same Android 4.4 KitKat OS topped by the Sense 6 UI.
Expect the HTC One Mini 2 to arrive in the UK in June in the same three colours (grey, silver, and gold) as the HTC One M8. There’s no news on pricing as yet.
