HTC One M7 with Sense won’t be updated to Android 5.1

HTC has confirmed it has no plans to update the HTC One M7 smartphone beyond the Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.

According to HTC’s Mo Versi, the standard edition of the 2013 handset with HTC Sense, will not be among those updated to the latest version of Lollipop, Android 5.1.

The sparsely-owned Google Play Edition will be boosted, but its the end of the road for devices carrying HTC’s love-it-or-loathe-it Sense UI

When asked on Twitter when the M7 will be updated, Versi replied (via 9to5Google): “Only the GPE version of M7 will receive 5.1. Our target is early April. Thanks.”

The admission hasn’t pleased some HTC fans, who’re now stuck on Android 5.0 without the bug fixes served up by 5.1.

“But 5.1 seems mostly a bug update… so you will leave a buggy M7 behind? Not very customer friendly,” wrote one user.

Another unhappy camper told HTC to “cut the Sense 7. We want bug fixes,” while a further M7 owner wrote: “HTC FAIL. Latest M7 update is crap. Too buggy. Another loyal customer lost!”

The company hasn’t explained why it won’t be bringing that bug squishing solution into play, but it must have something to do with the intricacies of integrating it with Sense.

Regardless of HTC’s reasoning, customers are not happy. Perhaps the firm is looking to lure those M7 owners into splashing out on a brand new HTC One M9?
