HTC looks set to release the HTC M4 as a downgraded and smaller version of its successful flagship the HTC One.

According to @evleaks, the HTC One Mini device is codenamed the HTC M4, which mirrors the HTC One’s factory codename the HTC M7.

The HTC M4 will downgrade the HTC One’s 4.7-inch Full 1080 x 1920p HD display to a rumoured 4.3-inch 720p HD display to make it more accessible to the mid-range smartphone market.

“Expected to ship with some manner of [HTC] One branding”, the HTC M4 is tipped to lack the 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU of the HTC One and instead play host to a dual-core version with the same 2GB of RAM. Recent rumours suggested the HTC M4 could have a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor.

Last month, HTC had reportedly just finished talk with Catcher Technology to become the exclusive supplier of a metal alloy body to be used in the HTC M4, which could mean the handset should look very similar to its HTC One sibling.

Bumping the internal storage down to 16GB but retaining the HTC UltraPixel camera technology, the HTC M4 could have a 1,700mAh battery rather than the 2,300mAh variety found in the HTC One.

HTC could use the HTC M4 as a HTC One Mini, following a similar release route as Samsung. The South Korean company released a downgraded version of the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, and are rumoured to be producing a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini edition of its latest flagship.

Still offering 4G LTE connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi, the HTC M4 will supposedly run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean overlaid with the HTC Sense 5.0 UI, complete with the HTC BlinkFeed and HTC Zoe features.

The HTC M4 release date is said to be somewhere “near the end of the second quarter”.
