HTC is excited to be Google’s unappreciated Pixel partner

Don’t you just hate it when other people take all the credit when you’ve done loads of the work? Well smartphone manufacturer HTC doesn’t seem to mind too much.

The company has issued its first public comments since the Pixel phones it helped to create were announced as a Made By Google product on Tuesday.

The Taiwanese firm failed to receive a mention for its efforts during the event as Google waxed lyrical about how the Pixel and Pixel XL were designed and built in-house.

There’s no sign of the HTC name or logo on the phone, a caveat which reportedly caused Huawei to shun an offer to build Pixel. Yet HTC seems cool with it all. In fact, it seems tickled pink.

In a statement given to PC Advisor, a representative for the company said: “HTC is excited to work with Google to create the new Pixel smartphones.

“Google and HTC have a long and storied history together, from developing the first commercially available Android product, the HTC Dream, and the first expectation-defying Nexus phone, the Nexus One, to HTC’s award-winning One and Desire smartphones running the latest and most innovative versions of Android.

We’re proud that when Google needed an industry-leading partner for the Pixel, HTC was the clear answer."

To be fair to Google, the company did take far more responsibility for the Pixel than it did for any of the Nexus phones. And it's not like Apple builds its own phones either.

Just think of HTC as Google’s Foxconn. They were in charge of manufacturing and assembling the components, but not a lot else.

Do you think HTC deserved a shout-out from Google? Is relegation to a manufacturing partner a comedown for a company with such prestige in the smartphone industry? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Head-to-Head: Are the Pixel phones overpriced?

From Star and Cash Cow to ....contract manufacturer.

This will mend HTCs P&L on one side for a couple years, but will kill the Vive VR undertaking.
