HP to launch ‘Sprout’ computing device next week, report claims

HP is to reveal a brand new computing product at an event in New York next week, according to reports on Tuesday.

Recode sources claim a new product category will be unveiled in the form of the ‘Sprout.’

What’s a Sprout you ask? Well the report claims its a computer with a large touchscreen display combined with a flat touch-enabled work surface. Above the screen is a projector and a 3D scanner, the sources say.

The idea seems to be that the projector will send a virtual display down to the work surface allowing users to work with items using their hands or a stylus. The report’s example suggests resizing and touching up photos as an example.

The 3D scanner meanwhile could be used to add ‘any object at hand’ to the work surface for it be be scanned and even added to the picture being worked on.

Recode says the Sprout PC will run Windows, but a Chrome OS iteration could follow, while adding it’ll be aimed at businesses that want to better inform their customers’ purchasing decisions.

For example, fashion retailers showing how consumers would look in an item or clothing or decorating stores demonstrating using a photo of a room to show how it would look with a new coat of pain.

The report says it’ll be one of a host of products the new HP intends to show off in New York on October 29.

The company recently split in two, promising new computing experiences as part of a drive to bounce back from the recent slowing of the PC industry.
