HP intent on making Sprout the 3D printer’s best friend

HP has revealed a new peripheral and free software update it hopes will simplify the process of creating 3D objects.

Users of HP Sprout, the company’s reimagined desktop computer, will be able to purchase a new accessory, called the 3D Capture Stage, from July.

It’s essentially a stand that rotates around and tilts upwards, allowing the Sprout’s built-in scanner to log all sides of a 3D item.

While it isn’t strictly necessary for full 3D scans, HP says it’ll make the process easier. Unfortunately, the 3D Capture Stage will be relatively pricey when it lands, setting you back $299 (£193).

This will be complemented by 3D Capture, a software upgrade that will stitch all of the scanner’s images together, and enable you to edit them before sending your final product to a 3D printer when you’re done.

What’s more, you can endear yourself to the growing community of 3D printer enthusiasts by sharing your scans via the usual online channels, including Facebook and email.

HP also says that it’s working on bringing Dremel’s 3D Idea Builder printer to Sprout, to transform it into an ‘end-to-end’ offering.
