Hendo Hoverboard 2.0 is coming on Back to the Future Day

Arx Pax has announced the a second-generation version of the Hendo Hoverboard is on the way.

The Hendo Hoverboard 2.0, whose predecessor hit headlines last year after being ridden by pro skater Tony Hawk, is set to be unveiled on October 21.

That date is special in the realms of geekdom, and here’s why – it’s the exact day that hoverboard-riding Marty McFly travelled to in ‘Back to the Future 2’.

Just like before, the new hoverboard works by floating over specially prepared metallic surfaces using magnets.

However, there have been a number improvements to the design second time around.

For a start, it’s now got a more skateboard-like deck and a sleeker profile, which should help improve rider control and balance.

There’s also an improved power system, with new USB connectivity and a longer battery life.

Arx Pax has simplified the engine controls, improved traction, and included a wireless safety switch so you can turn the hoverboard off remotely.

Hover engine performance has also been enhanced thanks to a more efficient design.

“Our second-generation hover engines, which power Hendo 2.0, are stronger, more efficient, and open up new possibilities for the way we transport objects and people,” says Jill Henderson, co-founder at Arx pax.

Henderson continues: “We’ve all heard of wearables; it’s time to start thinking about moveables.”

Earlier this year, luxury carmaker Lexus unveiled its own hoverboard, after weeks of teaser trailers.

Unfortunately, it suffered from the same inherent design issue that Hendo’s creation is plagued by – the inability to work on normal surfaces i.e. pavement.

Nevertheless, it’s great to see progression in the hoverboard sector, and maybe one day we’ll actually have a real, working hoverboard we can sling under our feet for the morning commute.
