Finnish game developer Rovio and Finnish Formula One driver Heikki Kovalainen are set to join forces for the 2012 racing season. Kovalainen will be wearing a helmet emblazoned with the fiery red face of the Angry Birds logo, complete with red tinted visor.
Aside from both hailing from Finland, the sponsorship makes particular sense as of course the eponymous Angry Birds are characteristically round, just like a racing helmet. Here’s hoping Heikki doesn’t utilise his helmet in similar Angry Birds fashion for any moments of frustration on the track.
This is far from the wackiest of thing Rovio has done with the Angry Birds brand, with it putting to the name to a cook book, board game, theme park and much sought after plush toy range.
When it comes to doing what it does best, the company is also finally producing a true sequel to the Angry Birds game, called Angry Birds Space. While it still won’t see the pigs getting their own back – as has long been hinted – there will be genuine enhancement of the basic game mechanics with different levels of gravitational pull to account for. This will be hitting an app store near you on 22nd March.
Heikki Kovalainen will be driving for the Caterham F1 team, with the season kicking off this weekend at Melbourne in Australia. With the new season having its coverage split, you’ll have to tune into Sky for the first race (first practice starts tomorrow, 16th March), or check the BBC for highlights later on Saturday.
