Han Solo Movie: Cast, release date and all you need to know

Star Wars fans rejoice: A Han Solo movie is in the works, so here are all the details on the Han Solo film release date, cast, director, trailers, news, rumours and more.

The Han Solo movie is an upcoming – and still untitled – science fiction movie set in the Star Wars universe. It’s the second entry to the Star Wars Anthology series, which began with the Rogue One film in 2016.

Read on for everything you need to know about the Han Solo movie.

Han Solo Movie Plot: Our guide to the Han Solo film storyline

The movie is a standalone tale (like Rogue One) that is set prior to the events of the original 1977 film. As such, it will follow a younger Han Solo than the one portrayed by Harrison Ford in the core Star Wars franchise.

In the movie, we’ll see Solo’s adventures with Wookiee companion Chewbacca, including meeting Lando Calrissian.

Speaking about the movie, writer Lawrence Kasdan said: “You know, he’s younger in this movie and that’s fun because you have to imagine him 10 years earlier in his early 20s. What was he like before he hardened up? Before he had some setbacks? Before he put on this cynical coat? What got him there?”

According to Lucasfilm, the movie will focus on “how [a] young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley”.

Han Solo Movie Release Date: When is the Han Solo film out?

The film’s production has already begun, with principal photography starting in January 2017 under the working title Star Wars: Red Cup.

Despite some setbacks, the Han Solo movie is still slated to debut on the original May 25, 2018 release date. It’s not clear whether the UK theatrical premiere will by in sync with the US release.

Han Solo Movie Director: Who’s working on the Han Solo film?

The movie is being produced by Lucasfilm Ltd. and will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios and Motion Pictures.

Filming initially began under the direction of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, but both were reportedly fired from the production in June 2017 over “creative differences”.

Following that fiasco, director Ron Howard took the helm on the film. Howard is a prolific auteur, with movies under his directorship including The Paper (1994), Apollo 13 (1995), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Cinerella Man (2005), The Da Vinci Code (2006), Frost/Nixon (2008), Rush (2013), and In The Heart Of The Sea (2015),

The screenplay was developed by writers Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, with the former having worked as a writer for The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Return of the Jedi (1983), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).

Also working on the movie is producer Kathleen Kennedy, who has also produced E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and the Jurassic Park franchise. She also helped produce Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).

The Han Solo movie will be scored by composer John Powell, who provided musical accompaniment to Chicken Run (2000), Happy Feet (2006), How to Train Your Dragon (2010), and Green Zone (2010).

Leading photography is cinematographer Bradford Young, who has worked on Pariah (2011), Restless City (2011), Middle of Nowehre (2012), and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (2013), and Mother of George (2013).

Production also includes editors Chris Dickens and Pietro Scalia. The former worked on Hot Fuzz (2007) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008), while the latter helped edit The Martian (2015) and Alien: Covenant (2017).
