Microsoft has announced that the next Halo game, Halo 4, will be released on November 6, 2012. It has been five years since Halo 3 dropped onto the Xbox 360, and expectations are high.
In the game's fantasy world, though, Halo 4 is set four years after Halo 3, and continues the story of Master Chief, the super soldier protagonist of the first three games in the series. Microsoft says it's the first in a new trio of Halo games, dubbed "Reclaimer".
Although the first game in half a decade to fit in with the original naming and story lineage of Halo, it's far from the only game to appear under the name in that time. Halo:ODST and Halo Wars, an RTS game, were released in 2009, and Halo: Reach in 2010.
Halo 4 is being developed by 343 Industries, a studio established by Microsoft in 2007 to work on the valuable gaming franchise. The original Halo: Combat Evolved was developed by Bungie, which announced in April 2010 that Halo: Reach would be its last Halo title. Halo 4 is the first game to be exclusively developed by 343 Industries.
Will it be the start of a new era for the Xbox staple, or the point at which Halo jumps the shark? Answers on a postcard (in the comments).
