Hackers snatch millions of Dropbox passwords and leak them online

Hundreds of Dropbox passwords have been leaked online, with hackers now claiming millions more could still be revealed.

Last night four Pastebin files were posted to Reddit containing several hundred usernames and passwords for Dropbox accounts.

The files were uploaded by an anonymous user who was keen to point out that more leaks would come if users showed ‘support.’

“Here is another batch of Hacked Dropbox accounts from the massive hack of 7,000,000 accounts,” read the post.

The user then requested Bitcoin donations as compensation for the leaked info.

Looking to quell potential panic, Dropbox has insisted that its own servers have not been breached, with leaked details coming from addition services.

Dropbox has not been hacked. These usernames and passwords were unfortunately stolen from other services and used in attempts to log in to Dropbox accounts,” an official statement from the cloud-storage firm read.

“We’d previously detected these attacks and the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now. All other remaining passwords have been expired as well.”

This means Dropbox has trawled through the list and ensured all of the passwords will no longer give access to the corresponding accounts.

The fiasco comes at an interesting time, after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden recently warned users off the cloud-storage service due to it being ‘hostile to privacy’.

Snapchat has also suffered its own hacking incident this week thanks to third party services, with several hundred thousand photos allegedly nabbed from user’s phones.
