Hackers penetrate adult dating site, leak millions of user details

Hackers have managed to infiltrate internet dating site Adult FriendFinder, posting the details of millions of users online.

Some 3.9 million members of the site, which describes itself as a ‘thriving sex community’, have seen their personal details seized and published, according to Channel 4 News.

This information includes email addresses, dates of birth, post codes and sexual preferences. Users actively seeking extramarital affairs have also been exposed, potentially adding an extra layer of embarrassment.

A hacker identified as ROR[RG] reportedly posted the stolen details on a private forum. Soon after, fellow hackers declared their intentions to hit victims with spam emails.

Even more worrying is the fact that the details of users who told the site to delete their accounts have also been leaked.

Shaun Harper, a user who deleted his account, told Channel 4 News that he’s already received numerous infected emails since the hack took place.

“The site seemed OK, but when I got into it I realised it wasn’t really for me, I was looking for something longer term,” he said.

“By that time I’d already given my information. You couldn’t get into the site without handing over information. I deleted my account, so I thought the information had gone. These sites are meant to be secure.”

FriendFinder Networks Inc, which owns Adult FriendFinder, has announced it is investigating the attack. The service has a global user base of 63 million, with 7 million users signed up in the UK.

“FriendFinder Networks Inc… understands and fully appreciates the seriousness of the issue,” the company said. “We have already begun working closely with law enforcement and have launched a comprehensive investigation with the help of leading third-party forensics expert.

“We pledge to take the appropriate steps needed to protect our customers if they are affected.”
