GTA Online’s new update looks an awful lot like PUBG

Rockstar Games has introduced a new update for GTA Online that appears to take inspiration from the popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

The Smuggler’s Run update was announced last week and is now available across PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Seasoned players of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will be strangely familiar with Motor Wars, an all new adversary mode that Rockstar describes as a “tense battle for survival.”

“Blending the adrenaline rush of Drop Zone with the claustrophobic tension of a match of Penned In, this brutal Adversary Mode is a deadly scavenger hunt where second place is not an option,” the official description reads.

“Up to four teams parachute into a periodically shrinking kill box strewn with a lethal assortment of guns, explosives, and Weaponized Vehicles. Work together, find a vehicle, and fight opposing teams and the shrinking map to survive and win.”

Rockstar doesn’t make any specific mention of the Battle Royale phenomenon but is clearly trying to take advantage of its growing popularity with its own spin on the idea.

Having already sold 8 million copies since launching on Steam early access in March 2017, PUBG is currently the most played game on Valve’s platform with 800,000+ concurrent players.

In addition to Motor Wars, the Smuggler’s Run update also adds an assortment of new weapons, equipment and vehicles for players to discover and wreak havoc with.
