GTA Online will offer games around 700 missions that are completely separate from GTA 5, according to Rockstar Games.
Leslie Benzies, Rockstar Games director, said players will be able to encounter GTA Online missions in a number of ways, including stumbling upon them on the map, calling or receiving a phone call from an NPC, or choosing one from the menu.
Although there will be around 700 missions in total, Benzies confirmed that Rockstar will be constantly renewing around 500 of those to keep GTA Online fresh, long after gamers have worked their way through GTA 5.
“I think there are about 700 missions at this time [for GTA Online]. We hope that you’ll always have 500 available that are renewed continuously,” said Benzies. “You can also go to the Rockstar Social Club and get more missions. So you can connect and download any player mission to populate your world online, both from friends and from other users.”
GTA Online will be released two weeks after GTA 5, adding another layer of gameplay to the title. Although it wasn’t part of the original plan for GTA 5 multiplayer, GTA Online is a living breathing world in its own right.
“At one point, and I can’t remember exactly when, while working on the GTA 5 online multiplayer we though it must be something more than the typical online content. Then we decided that it should operate as a separate unit,” explained Benzies. “Since we always wanted to combine the single player and multiplayer worlds, we propose that all those things you could do alone [in GTA 5], you can now do with friends. It has been our dream for a long time, particularly since GTA 3.”
GTA Online may be a separate game to GTA 5, but Rockstar Games has made it very easily accessible to those engrossed in the main storyline.
“During the game a wheel appears at the bottom of the screen that lets you select the protagonist. There are three spaces for single player characters and, on the underside, there is another slot for your character in multiplayer. If you select it, the camera pulls back and goes straight to your online character, letting you play from that point.”
In a new matchmaking system, GTA Online will pair gamers with players of a similar rank if none of the player’s friends are currently online, making sure there’s always someone to make trouble with.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that the GTA 5 release date for Xbox 360 and PS3 will take place on September 17.
