GTA 5 Developer: Two year product cycle would ‘degrade the franchise’

With the GTA 5 release date recently delayed until September 17, the game’s publisher Take Two Interactive has suggested it does not want to ‘degrade the franchise’ by pushing out Grand Theft Auto titles in quick succession.

Claiming that releasing a new GTA game every two years would cause ‘product fatigue’, Take Two’s COO Karl Slatoff has stated that although consumer demand is there for more frequent GTA offerings, faster product cycles would not allow the franchise to progress.

“Often times people ask us ‘Why don’t you come out with Grand Theft Auto every two years?’” Slatoff said at a recent Wedbush Transformational Technologies Conference. “To us, that doesn’t make sense, because Grand Theft Auto, every single time it comes out, is a brand new experience.”

He added: “You can’t possible do that in two years. And if we did that, our product would fatigue and the franchise would degrade from a value perspective.”

Despite franchises such as Call of Duty hitting annual product cycles to much acclaim, the GTA 5 creators have claimed that following a similar suit would be detrimental to their product’s overall impression.

Backing up Slatoff’s comments. Rockstar North developer Leslie Benzies recently stated that the GTA franchise could easy fill and annual product slot, but that this is not the direction the company wants to take.

“We could easily have churned out a new version year after year without really progressing as a franchise,” he said. “But if we did that, eventually the fans would lose interest.”

Having previously been tipped for a ‘spring 2013’ arrival, the eagerly awaited GTA 5 release date was recently pushed back to September 17, an arrival that will see the game hit retailers just weeks before the PS4 release date.

Despite landing in close proximity to the next-gen console, it has been claimed that a GTA 5 PS4 release will not be available when the Nintendo Wii U rivalling gamer hits markets, an omission that is sure to disappoint many.

Discussing when eager gamers will be able to play GTA 5 on the PS3 replacement, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter predicted: “Eventually. Not at launch.”

He went on to add: “If you go back to the PlayStation 3 E3, the ’06 E3, [Rockstar] showed Red Dead Redemption. What year did that bad boy come out? 2010. It only took four years, and it was shown, it was shown during a launch event. So that’s about the pace I think Rockstar is on.”

He tourmentingly added: “I think Rockstar will have a game before the PS5.”
