GTA 5 breaks day one sales records raking in $800m

GTA 5 has broken all day one sales records, raking in a staggering $800 million (£496m) during its first 24 hours on sale.

Following the game’s long awaited release earlier this week, developer Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 5 has recorded the “highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the company.” What’s more, it has eclipsed the previous day one sales record of $500 million held by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

As well as breaking global sales records, GTA 5 has taken the mantle of the fastest selling game in UK history, shifting 1.57 million copies in just 24 hours. This strong UK uptake has seen Rockstar recoup £65 million, or more than a third of the game’s £170m budget, in just one day in the UK alone.

“We are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V,” Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two, parent company of Rockstar has state. “Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence.”

Although the latest instalment to the Grand Theft Auto franchise has been an immediate consumer success, a number of GTA 5 problems have already emerged.

With the GTA 5 technical support pages becoming filled with questions and complaints of bugs and freezing issues, a number of gamers are reportedly still unable to access their PS3 pre-order downloads, with Rockstar passing the buck across to console manufacturer Sony.

Tuesday’s GTA 5 release date saw the game touch down for Xbox 360 and PS3, with PC gamers left only to petition the developer to bring the title to a none-console platform.
