Grand Theft Auto 6 is in development, and we almost had GTA: Tokyo

Grand Theft Auto

Development on Grand Theft Auto 6 has already begun, according to a source at Techradar.

The source reveals that preliminary work on the sequel is underway, but a location is yet to be confirmed.

Grand Theft Auto 5 first launched in September 2013, so it’s no surprise the sequel is already in the works.

Techradar’s source also claims that Rockstar had plans to make Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo for PS2 in the early 2000s.

The developer made several trips to Japan’s capital, hoping to determine its potential as a GTA setting.

Unfortunately, the project was canned due to complications with Tokyo’s road network and translating the franchise feel to an entirely new continent.

Tokyo sounds like a fantastic location for Rockstar’s franchise, so hopefully they bring it back.

R*'s games are a triumph, sadly their multiplayer server/network infrastructure are a joke.

I would like to see this as a map extension to GTA V, possibly taking the franchise up north to a san Francisco/ Portland esque location, just so i can punch hipsters in the face all day.

i like to see in the game where we can rob more than just stores without bein in heist, add mud where it be more realistic by gettin stuck, like off roadin, need more than just wet dirt and gotta use a winch, have it where you gotta fill up at gas stations or truck stops when cars and trucks gets low on gas or fuel. drive the train and make it wreck. gotta make it more real than just drivin around nonstop. plus add multiplay for offline like they did with San Andreas

If you're making GTA Tokyo, you don't need to make a Google Maps accurate version of the city. You can always have inaccuracy in a game, honestly.

So, this statement, "the project was canned..... an entirely new continent", seems like a weak excuse only.

Las Vegas/Las Venturas!!!!! A proper version of Vegas would offer so much scope for missions and story.
It would offer gambling, drugs, prostitution, casino heists, off roading, shopping. Vegas has an airport right on the strip and a military base nearby, and a motor speedway. I've thought it's the perfect place for GTA for years. They could even allow you to drive there from Los Santos maybe?
