Following last week’s Gran Turismo 6 release date, new figures have revealed the racing sim has achieved just one fifth of the opening week sales of its predecessor, Gran Turismo 5.

Landing as a PS3 exclusive, the Sony published Gran Turismo 6 has forgone a launch on the new PS4 console, instead leaving the racing game market open to the delayed Drive Club.

With Gran Turismo 5 having launched three years ago following countless delays and much anticipation, Gran Turismo 6 has arrived on the scene to far less fanfare and disappointing early sales. Although launching one day before the weekly sales charts are counted, Gran Turismo 6 could only manage to enter the UK All Format Gaming Chart in eighth.

With Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts holding on to top spot, fellow current and next-gen console releases FIFA 14 and Battlefield 4 secured the remaining podium positions in second and third spots respectively. Assassin’s Creed 4 held on to fourth position.

Although limited to the current gen of PS3 and Xbox 360, GTA 5 remained in the gaming chart’s top five for the week ending December 7, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes secured sixth spot with Just Dance 2014 in seventh.

Lining up behind the latest Gran Turismo offering, the PS4 exclusive Killzone: Shadow Fall lined up in ninth with Batman: Arkham Origins rounding out the week’s top ten.

If it were out on the PS4 I would have ordered it, but as my PS3 has been shoved to one side for now and my efforts and energies focussed on the new console it's just not a compelling enough purchase for me. It's a refinement of GT5 rather than a breaker of new ground, and by failing to release it for the new consoles it just doesn't seem interesting enough to invest time or cash.
