Corning has revealed Gorilla Glass 3, the latest version of the toughened glass popularly utilised in smartphone production.
Gorilla Glass 3, as you might expect, is set to be even tougher than Gorilla Glass 2. What’s impressive is how much tougher it will be, at least if Corning’s claims are to be believed.
As reported by Engadget, Corning has implemented a feature called Native Damage Resistance into Gorilla Glass 3. This molecular tinkering means a reduction in the appearance of flaws and scratches, and better strength retention when such knocks inevitably do occur.
The resulting figures are quite startling: three times the scratch resistance capabilities of Gorilla Glass 2, a 40 per cent reduction in the number of visible scratches, and a 50 per cent boost in retained strength when flaws do develop.
Whilst Corning has revealed this initial information on Gorilla Glass 3 already, it will be officially unveiling the new product on January 7, a day before the Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas.
At the show itself, Corning will have its own booth, and will be proving its claims as to Gorilla Glass 3’s toughness with hourly demonstrations. The company will also be demonstrating how this new tougher glass will benefit larger multi-touch displays, which we presume will relate to the spate of Windows 8-focused monitors that will inevitably be on display from other manufacturers.
Despite this, the one group that will be most interested in Gorilla Glass 3 is, we suspect, iPhone users. Anything that could stop those telltale cracks from ruining their finely honed yet fragile smartphones would have to be off interest.
