GoPro today announced a new member to the Hero 4 family of action cameras, the GoPro Hero 4 Session.
The Session is GoPro’s smallest and lightest camera to date and combines a small cube-like body with water-resistance. It can stay submerged in up to 10m/33’ of the wet stuff without the need for a separate housing that adds weight and bulk. GoPro claims it is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the rest of the range and that the lack of housing covering the Session means the dual on-board mics capture audio better than ever before.
Unlike it’s bigger and more expensive brother, the Hero 4 Black, the Session does not shoot in 4K. Instead the highest resolution supported is a 4:3 ratio 1440 pixels at 30fps as well as 1080 at 60fps and 720 at 100fps, among others. The ProTune setting that allows tweaks to settins such as ISO and SuperView are also included. SuperView dynamically stretches a 4:3 aspect ratio and makes it widescreen – so you get more of the sky and ground in shot.
The GoPro Hero 4 Session was in development for three years there was one aim in mind:
“With the HERO4 Session we challenged ourselves to produce the smallest, lightest, most convenient GoPro possible.” said Nicholas Woodman, GoPro founder and CEO.
It uses a simple one-button system to take video or photos (in time-lapse mode) while a second, smaller button helps tag important moments in a video for easier editing. Despite its diminutive frame the Session also has a small LCD screen to alter some setting and to help with connecting to a smartphone.
