Google has pulled its previous flagship phone, the Nexus 5, from its online store.
Yesterday saw Google launching a brand new online store dedicated to its growing range of hardware, including the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet.
However, it was observed by many that the company’s previous flagship smartphone, the Nexus 5, wasn’t present on this new store front.
Sure enough, a Google spokesperson has confirmed to The Verge that “while some inventory of Nexus 5 still exists (with our retail and carrier partners), our focus is on the Nexus 6 at this time.”
Back in December, Google revealed that production had stopped on the Nexus 5, which launched in late 2013. However, the handset remained available to purchase through the Google Play Store as Google sold off its remaining stock.

While the removal of the Nexus 5 from Google’s store was inevitable, though, it will come as a bit of a disappointment to many. It remained one of few handsets that ran Android 5.0 Lollipop in its purest form, and with a 5-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 800 CPU, and wireless charging, it was still a capable performer to this day.
More importantly, it leaves Google’s range looking a little unbalanced, with only the oversized Nexus 6 left to carry the Lollipop smartphone torch. Hopefully Google will come up with a 5-inch alternative sooner rather than later.
