Google Preparing ‘Entertainment Device’

Google is set to enter the home entertainment hardware market with an ‘entertainment device’ which currently exists as a prototype but which will eventually be produced by Google’s recent acquisition, Motorola.

Sources speaking to both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times who claim to be familiar with the product, said this device will be based around home entertainment and will be used for streaming music as well as having other features in the future.

Last week Google filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) saying it would begin testing a device which it mysteriously called “an entertainment device.”

The application went on to say the device would use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and would “connect to other home electronics equipment.” The testing will take place in employees ' homes throughout the summer.

Speaking to the New York Times, James McQuivey, a Forrester analyst said: “Google’s future depends on extending its influence beyond the PC screen. They’ve made tremendous progress in the mobile phone business, but their attempts to do the same thing with the TV and tablet flopped because the hardware manufacturers they relied on were not able to move fast enough.”

Speculation is rife regarding what the device may be. Our best guess would be a media hub which will let you access content from Google’s new Drive cloud storage service and stream it to speakers, TV and PCs around your home.

Let us know in the comments what you think this “entertainment device” will be?
