Google has refreshed the Google Play Store, with the Android servicing content outlet taking a leaf out of Apple’s book to launch a tablet specific app section dubbed ‘Designed for Tablets’.

The first time the Android store will bring tablet specific apps together, front and centre on the Google Play storefront, the new designed for tablet section will help owners of the Google Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the likes, find content tailored to their devices.

“We’ve been hard at working making consumers find your existing apps,” Chris Yerga, Google Director of Android Engineering said during the Google I/O keynote today. “The new Play Store isn’t just about looks, it is about improving discovery of apps, it is about adapting to you.”

Unveiling the Designed for Tablet section, he added: “We know that a many developers have invested a lot of energy in to building awesome tablet experiences and we want to make sure users can discover your tablet apps so starting today we are going to be providing a view in our top charts that surfaces applications that are Designed for Tablets.

“This section will show apps that meet our tablet app design guidelines, so they meet screen sizes etc.”

Highlighting the recent Google Play resdesign as the base for the move to tablet specific app services, Yerga added: “The new design of the Play Store gives us an excellent foundation for doing more than what you’ve already seen.”
