Google has offered up a binge-friendly new feature for media-hungry families everywhere: family sharing.
Google has launched the Google Play Family Library, a brand new feature that lets family members share Google Play purchases with each other for no added cost. That means if you buy a movie on your account, another family member can also watch it without having to beg for your login details.
“Friday night is movie night at our home, and my wife and I look forward to our weekly ritual of putting the kids to bed, getting some takeout, and catching up on our movie wishlist,” explains Raj Iyengar, Product Manager at Google Play. “Whether it’s making the ‘Blue Steel’ face from Zealander, swapping tips on playing Monument Valley, or reading Dragons Loves Tacos to the kids at bedtime, these sharing moments bring us closer together."

It’s important to note that you choose which items you specifically want to share. That means you don’t have to open up your entire purchase history to your child, for instance. You simply find an individual item in your library, hit the options button, and add it to the Family Library as you see fit.
All purchases that are added to the Family Library are available across Android devices, and movies, TV shows, and books can even be used on iOS devices and the web.
“Flexibility is also built into your purchasing options,” adds Iyengar. “When you sign up, you’ll select a credit card to share as your family payment method, but your family members will always have the option of buying stuff with their personal credit cards or gift cards. And for your younger family members, you’ll have the option to approve each of their purchases."
Movies can be shared too, if purchased on the Google Play Store
This isn’t the first time Google has attempted such a proposition. The search engine giant already offers a family subscription on Google Play Music, allowing six family members to share a single £14.99-per-month plan.
It’s also worth mentioning that Apple already offers this feature, and calls it ‘Family Sharing’.
Google’s Family Library feature is “rolling out over the next few days”, and will be available in: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
