Google plans an open alternative to Apple AirPlay

Google is reportedly working on its own alternative to Apple AirPlay with the mooted open system seemingly set to be available for third-party manufacturers and media providers to use.

The system follows its recently launched feature to beam video from Android devices to Google TV products.

GigaOm reports that Google is “hoping to bring a number of device and software vendors on board to provide the industry with an open technology to exchange data between second screens and TV-connected devices.”

Google product manager Timbo Drayson told the website, “We really want to move the whole industry forward.”

It means that users can expect a closer integration between services like YouTube and Android mobile phones or tablets and smart-TV platforms that aren’t necessarily based on the Google TV system.

The story suggests that the key to such a system’s success would be the auto-discovery of devices on the same network, which makes Apple’s AirPlay so successful and less hassle to set-up than, say, a DLNA-based device. Auto-discovery was one of the features in the troubled and now delayed Google Nexus Q media-streaming orb, so perhaps the technology will resurface elsewhere?

It adds that “the new protocol makes it possible for data to flow in both directions, which would enable developers to build second-screen experiences that correspond to what’s happening on live TV as well.”
