Google Photos adds rediscovery feature

Google has added a new image rediscovery feature to its popular Google Photos service.

A new update is rolling out to Google Photos on iOS, Android, and the web aimed at sending you on a series of nostalgia trips.

The new opt-in feature will help you privately rediscover old photos in an organic way. It works on an annual basis, so events that were captured on today’s date in years past will be surfaced.

When agreed to, you’ll receive cards in Assistant view made up of photos from the past. This will include a collage featuring people and places from the day.

“If you snapped photos on a hiking trip this time last year, chances are that Google Photos will let you know,” reads the related Google+ post. “And with a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos in one place, you’ll have lots of memories to look back on.”

It’s up to you if you then want to share those memories with others via a social network.

Google Photos has been a big hit since it launched at the end of May. It offers free and unlimited online photo storage of photos, and comes with intuitive uploading software that pulls all of your pictures into the cloud.

The service will also automatically contextualise your images according to time, date, location, and content. The Assistant feature mentioned above intelligently assembles neat albums made up of special events and holidays, so you don’t have to go digging for them.
