The Google Nexus Gem smartwatch is in late-stage development and Google is in talks to start mass production of the device.

According to “people familiar with the matter”, Google is in talks with Asian suppliers about mass production of the Google smartwatch, which is already well into the later stages of development.

Running on an unknown version of Android, the Nexus Gem smartwatch will be heavily integrated with Google Now, allowing the device to answer your questions and perform tasks from voice commands.

The smartwatch will be able to predict users’ needs and make recommendations as well, according to the Wall Street Journal sources.

Apparently Google has been focused on reducing the power consumption of its smartwatch too, so it will last longer between charges. This could be one of the features that separates Google’s smartwatch from the competition as shoddy battery life is a known issue with existing options.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear claims to offer a 25 hour battery life, but you’ll actually get less than that. The Sony SmartWatch 2 offers a little better than that at 4 days, but we expect it won’t actually last that long.

Similar to the Galaxy Gear and SmartWatch 2, the source said the Google Smartwatch will be able to communicate with smartphones and tablets.

However, building on the limited functionality of the Galaxy Gear, the Google Nexus smartwatch will be able to draw information like your travel schedule from emails using Google Now.

The sources also added that the Nexus Gem smartwatch should be ready for mass production “within months”.

Apple is also said to be launching its own Apple iWatch early next year and Apple CEO Tim Cook teased new product lines for next year.
