The Google Nexus 8 might have just been spotted with a fishy Flounder codename.
Google is well-known for equipping its devices with fish-themed codenames including tuna, manta and hammerhead and it looks like the Nexus 8 has stolen one from The Little Mermaid herself.
This isn’t the first time the Flounder codename has cropped up. In fact it was listed in a Chrome bug report and was originally believed to be a successor to the Google Nexus 7 2.
However, this time the Flounder codename has popped up in an Android 4.4.3 KitKat changelist linked to HTC.
This has prompted speculation that the Google Nexus 8 (or Nexus 9) will be made by HTC rather than Asus like the Nexus 7.
Some believe Google might scrap its allegiance with Asus in favour of HTC, but it would be more likely that HTC will be solely responsible for the Nexus 8 and Asus will continue manufacturing the 7-inch variant.
Of course, the majority of this is speculation as the Flounder device may well be the long awaited Google Nexus 10.
With Google I/O scheduled for June 25 – 26, it’s possible that Google will have a brand new tablet size in store for launch next month or finally a Nexus 10 2.
We’re not quite sure which one we’d rather see, but there’s speculation Google could possibly abandon the 7-inch tablet line in favour for the larger iPad mini 2 Retina rivalling 8-incher.
