Google has finally officially unveiled its much leaked Nexus 7 Android tablet, the launch device for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Taking a different tack to Apple with its large 9.7inch iPad, Google's new tablet has a 7inch screen, and subsequently weighs much lower 340 grams. It also sports a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, has a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1.2MP front facing camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC, yet it still has 9hrs battery life.

Google reckons it's an ideal size for reading books - we'd agree, and there's a new Google Play magazine app that will provide animated page turns, fancy formatting and rich interactive content. The content will also be available to download for offline viewing.

Other new features include a completely redesigned YouTube app and a built in 'What's this song?' widget.

With it Tegra 3 processor the tablet should also be good for gaming, a point which Google demonstrated by playing an impressive looking couple of games - Horn and Dead Trigger.

Available from today the tablet will set you back $199 - we're waiting for official UK availability and pricing.

More to come.
