Google Nexus 7 Gains 720p HD video recording

We adored the Google Nexus 7 by Asus when we reviewed it. It’s an incredibly fast, powerful, sleek and well-built tablet for the price, with screen quality to match.

The only area where Asus had skimped a little (aside from the deliberate lack of video output and microSD card slot) is that camera. First off, there’s only a front-facing one, with no rear snapper. This means taking pictures of anything other than yourself is awkward at best, and essentially limits the camera’s functionality to that of a static webcam for video chatting and the like.

However, even this single camera was limited to 480p, or Standard Definition, if you prefer. Seeing as it didn’t exactly produce stunning image quality to begin with, it didn’t make the Google Nexus 7 a great vid-chat option.

An enterprising dev over at XDA-developers has found an easy way around this apparent software-only limitation however, ramping things up to 720p – and meaning your Nexus 7’s Skype video calls can squeeze in a few extra pixels for that almost-HD look. Just click here to get it.
