Google Maps gaining pitstop feature

Google is adding a useful new feature to Google Maps that will enable you to search for pitstops along your navigated route.

When following a Google Maps route in full-on navigation mode, it will soon be possible to search for and choose additional waypoints that are just off your current path.

You can imagine how useful this will be for finding good lunch spots or fuel stops whilst driving through unfamiliar territory. Sure enough, there will be four pre-selected options available to help you quickly search for petrol stations, restaurants, grocery shops, and coffee shops. All the essentials for a lengthy journey.

Interestingly, it’s also been noted that fuel stops will include petrol pricing information.

The new feature was discovered by Android Police, which managed to obtain the upcoming new version of the Google Maps Android app nice and early. As that suggests, it seems as if Android users will be getting the new ‘search along route’ feature first.

At present there doesn’t appear to be any scope for fine tuning the selection process – so, for example, you can’t expand or contract the search area. Instead you need to manually pan and zoom if you want to search further afield.

Still, as an option to quickly add a pitstop to your journey without messing up the main route, it’ll be a welcome addition. Keep your eyes peeled for an update on the Google Play Store.
