Google has made its Microsoft Office document editing app QuickOffice free to download on Android and iOS, as well as bolstering the free Google Drive storage allowance.
The QuickOffice app, which allows you to create and edit MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents from your mobile device and save them to Google Drive, used to cost around £15 in its Pro guise.
Now Google, which acquired the app in July 2012, has ensured that every Android and iOS user can access Microsoft’s productivity files for free.
The new app, which is version 6.1, is available now on the App Store and Google Play Store. It comes with a crisp new Google-style logo, and also adds the ability to create ZIP folders and to view charts in Excel and PowerPoint folders. The app works across devices now, too.
As an additional incentive to download the app, any users who do so and sign in using their Google accounts by September 26 will receive 10GB extra of Google Drive storage space for two years. It should show up over the coming weeks, according to the related Google Drive blog post, so don’t worry if it doesn’t appear to have been added instantly.
All of which acts as a bit of a slap to Microsoft, which sells free MS Office compatibility as one of the major plus points of its Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 mobile and tablet ecosystems.
