It seems to be Gmail day over in Mountain View as Google has just announced the launch of the a native app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch following on from the launch of the new-look Gmail earlier in the day.

Only yesterday we reported on rumours that the app had been submitted to the App Store for approval and so those reports proved to be true. The app is available now in the App Store and Google says it has “combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go.”

Looking at the features which the new app will have compared to the existing web app, push notifications is top of the list. It will also allow you to search across your entire inbox quickly to find that email you are looking for.

One of the most promising features will be the ability to attach pictures from within Gmail, a feature sadly lacking in Apple’s own Mail app.

The iPad app has been optimised for the larger screen with a split view allowing you read your emails in one pane while being able to navigate your inbox in another – just like the Android tablet version of the service.

You’ll also get Priority Inbox, archiving, labelling, starring and spam reporting from within the app.

A nice feature, and again one missing from the Apple Mail app, will be the ability to pull down your inbox to refresh it, just like your Twitter feed. Also a swipe right will bring up your labels without leaving the inbox.

Google has said the app is now available in the App Store, however we currently can’t see it on our iPhone 4, but no doubt it will be available very soon and we’ll be checking it out (along with the iPad version) and letting you know what we think.

Let us know in the comments below if you’ll be downloading the Gmail app to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and what your initial impressions are.

Update: Google has just announced (via Twitter) that it has pulled the app from the App Store due to a bug with notifications. No word on when it will be back, but we'll be keeping and eye out and let you know.
