Google launches Device Assist app for Nexus phones

Google has released a new app, Device Assist, aimed at helping Nexus and Google Play Edition owners to diagnose issues.

The new Google app is available now on the US Google Play Store for Nexus and Google Play edition phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop. Oh, and Android One phones. Mustn’t forget them.

That’s a pretty limited subsection of devices, admittedly.

The app is really a jazzed up help app, providing tips and tricks on key Android areas in a neat Google Now style. However, the most clever part of the app is its diagnosis element.

The app will pick up on an overly aggressive brightness setting that might be hitting your battery hard, and turn it down accordingly. It’ll also detect when you’re using a slow adapter that isn’t charging up your phone very efficiently.

Nexus and Google Play edition Users can also access Google’s support system from the app, sending out diagnostic information and requesting a callback should you need extra assistance.

Like we say, this new Device Assist app will be of no use at all to most Android users, but its basic diagnostic tool offers an intriguing glimpse at what could be possible in terms of online smartphone servicing in future.
