Google improving Chrome for Mac’s battery performance

Google is improving the Chrome for Mac experience to boost battery life performance.

Macbook users will attest to the fact that Chrome is a little thirsty for power, especially when you compare it to Apple’s own Safari browser.

Google now seems to be addressing Chrome’s thirsty nature, particularly when it comes to Mac. Over on a Google+ post, Google engineer Peter Kasting has written about these efforts.

Apparently, Chrome now prioritises rendering foreground tabs, whereas before background tabs had the same priority.

Other improvements seem to have been specifically targeted at matching and even exceeding the way Safari does things. “The Chrome team has no intention of sitting idly by (pun intended) when our users are suffering,” says Kasting.

Expect to see these improvements coming to the Chrome beta channel in a little over a month, which means that a full release is probably a couple of months away yet.

Earlier in the month we reported that Google was implementing a new feature into Chrome that would serve to save power by disabling non-essential Flash content.

The company is working with Adobe to keep core Flash content (the videos you actually want to watch) running while things like incidental ads are paused. If you want to continue watching them, you’ll have to click them to resume playing.

Evidently Google is taking criticism of Chrome’s battery performance to heart – and not before time, some would say.
