Google hints Android M will be called ‘Milkshake’

Android M

Google last night introduced the Developer Preview of the next version of Android, but for now, its name is still a mystery.

Until it’s officially released in autumn, it’ll be simply known as Android M. However, some eagle-eyed I/O spectators think they’ve already cracked Google’s big secret.

Each edition of Android is named after a sweet treat, with previous versions called Lollipop, KitKat, Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich, Honeycomb, Gingerbread, Froyo, Eclair, Donut and Cupcake.

Much of the build-up to yesterday’s show centred on the name of the next version of Android, with marshmallow, Milky Way, Mars, meringue and marzipan some of the names suggested.

Dave Burke, Google’s vice president of engineering, introduced the upcoming operating system on stage while wearing an Android Wear smartwatch.

Teasing the software’s release name, Burke’s watch was adorned with a little picture of a milkshake, which got plenty of viewers’ tongues watering and wagging.

However, Burke has moved to shoot down the gossipers, taking to Twitter to say, “Rumors of Milkshake are exaggerated. My watch face hack cycles thru' my fav M desserts.”

Accompanying the milkshake shot were images of a milk carton, a bottle of malt whiskey, and what appears to be a smashed malteser or a cookie. Good to see that it will still likely be named after something bad for your health.

A cover-up? Possibly. Our money’s definitely still on milkshake though.

Burke’s presentation focused on Android M, which he says will improve the core user experience for smartphone users. The operating system will come with a range of new features, including Android Pay, Google Now on Tap and Doze.
